empower students and families to become self-reliant, responsible,
productive and healthy through a collaborative team effort.
 
 DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
The mission of the Silver Valley Unified School District Health Services Department is to provide a comprehensive, multi-faceted service system that promotes early prevention and identification of health problems while supporting student success at school through a collaborative approach.
 
Our department relies on strong partnerships, effective coordination of effort, and a clear understanding of how to make life better for children and our staff.

The Director of Health Services coordinates the following to create our comprehensive program:
  • Creation of school health programs and guidelines
  • Updating and reviewing board policies
  • Coordination of state and county health mandates
  • Coordinator of Medi-Cal
  • Supervision of nurses and health clerks
  • In-service training for staff: CPR, First Aid, Medication Administration, Toileting/Diapering and special medical procedures
  • Employee TB, Hepatitis B, and Influenza clinics
  • Case Management of Home Hospital
  • Preschool assessments
  • School site health screenings
  • District –wide oral health assessments
  • Implementation of categorical programs:
Ø      Medi-Cal Reimbursement Program
Ø      Title IV – Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act
Ø      AB1113 – The Carl Washington School Safety and Violence Prevention Act
Ø      T.U.P.E. – Tobacco-Use Prevention Education
 
  • Coordinates and review supplies for district disaster bags
  • Consults with physicians
 
The Health Services Department staff has one full-time credentialed school nurse. Each school site houses a health clerk who is trained in CPR, First Aid, and the procedures and guidelines of the Department. The Department also contracts a licensed Marriage, Family Therapist offering student assistance and support in making healthy decisions, coping with crisis, and resolving or managing problems that might influence success at school.
 
The school nurse provides the following to our students:
  • Health education in the classroom
  • Special Education health appraisals
  • Drafts, performs, and monitors specialized medical procedures
  • Monitors and/or consults with health clerks on emergencies at all school sites
  • Home visits regarding health of child and/or attendance
  • Serves on SARB (School Attendance Review Board) and District Safety and Health Committee
  • Screenings for vision, hearing, scoliosis, communicable diseases, and follow-up
 
Our health clerks play a vital roll at each school site, as well as within the Department:
  • Audits and monitors immunization status
  • Audits and monitors “physical” reports for school entrance
  • Audits and monitors “Oral Health Assessment” for school entrance
  • Performs specialized medical procedures
  • Calls parents regarding health problems
  • First Aid at school sites / maintains kits for classrooms
  • Oversees the maintenance and locations of disaster bags
  • Screenings; organizes, records results, and follow-ups
  • Prepares reports for kindergarten immunization status, vision and hearing, scoliosis results, CHDP compliance, child abuse, and monthly service statistics
  • Medi-Cal billing compliance
  • Administers medication and maintains accurate records
  • Provides a school health problem list / confidential
 
It is essential to have a high degree of parent and community involvement in unifying and strengthening the components of a comprehensive Health Services program. We need parents to participate and make a “voice” on our Healthy Lifestyles Committee. Every parent can play a role in maintaining the health of each child…AFTERALL, Healthy Children Learn Better!
