Silver Valley Unified School District Child Nutrition Services Department is committed to providing an environment in which students may learn to make healthy food choices for life. It is our goal to provide high quality nutritional meals to all our students in the Silver Valley Unified School District.
Good nutrition will build a foundation for healthy kids and a healthier tomorrow.
I would like to take this opportunity to let you know about some of the efforts the Child Nutrition Services Department is making to ensure our students are receiving healthy nutritious meals everyday. It starts with a balanced diet that includes food from all of the food groups- dairy foods, lean meats or beans, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and yes, even fats and sugars in moderation, of course. Everyday we serve over 700 breakfasts and over 1500 lunches to the students in our district, following the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program. The following will give you an idea of some of the guidelines we follow:
- A variety of whole wheat/grain products are offered to students, such as: whole wheat buns, bread sticks, pizza crust, breading and whole grain cereal, crackers, and muffins.
- Fruits and Vegetables offered daily
- Only 1% or Non-fat Milk served
- Meals not to exceed 30% calories from fat (not to exceed 10% from Saturated fat)
- Trans-fat free
- Reduced sodium to less than 800 milligrams per meal
- Low Cholesterol
- Increased Fiber
We believe that Good Nutrition and Learning go hand in hand.
The Child Nutrition Services Department is made up of a team of food & nutrition professionals that are dedicated to providing students with access to a variety of healthy, appealing and affordable meals that will meet the student’s nutritional needs.
We support learning by promoting healthy food choices for lifelong good nutrition habits.
