The Barstow Unified School District is in the County of San Bernardino, California, and encompasses an area of approximately 1,740 square miles. During the current fiscal year, the District serves 7,200+ students and maintains seven elementary schools, one elementary/middle school, one intermediate school, one junior high school, one high school, one continuation high school, an independent study program, and an adult school. The Business Services Department is responsible for offering goods and services that involve the financial, commercial, and industrial aspects of the education of our students.
The Business Services Division is responsible for the direction, coordination, and leadership of the Business Department. The division is responsible for coordinating contracted services, interacting with outside agencies and financial institutions, and preparing and presenting board, community and staff reports. The Business Services Department is also responsible for conducting financial, operational, performance, and compliance audits to assess the effectiveness of controls, accuracy of financial records, and the efficiency of operations. It also serves as the liaison between the District and all internal and outside agencies that have business with the district.

The Department of Fiscal Services has separate operations that include the following: budget preparation, financial services, payroll services, account payables, budgeting, and student attendance. The Fiscal Services Department insures that the District complies with state laws and regulations regarding financial accountability and reporting. It oversees budget development, financial reporting, accounts payable, student attendance accounting, annual audits, and payroll processing and disbursement. The department is also responsible for developing and implementing plans to address control weaknesses and other audit findings, as well as assisting in the development of accounting and auditing procedures.
Maintenance, Operations, Transportation

The Department of Maintenance, Facilities and Operations provides maintenance, custodial, grounds, and housekeeping services for all school sites to keep them conducive to the educational process. To be able to provide pleasant learning and working environments for students, faculty and support staff, the department has three distinct areas of responsibility:
General Maintenance Services – Provides routine maintenance of facilities, systems and equipment (including telecommunications).
Building & Grounds Services – Responsible for the housekeeping and grounds maintenance as well as offering assistance during the regular year and total responsibility during the summer months for the custodial operations of each site.
Preventive/Deferred Maintenance Services – Provides big-ticket repairs in compliance with the approved Deferred Maintenance plan and enhances building maintenance and facilities’ life cycles by providing continuous preventive maintenance services.
In addition, the department is responsible for providing planning input for the construction of improvements to the existing school facilities as well as the construction of new facilities. The department is also responsible for all safety issues as they relate to facilities as well as hazardous materials programs and disaster preparedness programs.

The Department of Food Services provides breakfast and lunch to the students of Barstow Unified School District. While running a central kitchen at its present location, the department is responsible for the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, student a la carte program, and a catering program. One of the department’s principal roles is to provide meals to students in compliance with nutritional standards as established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and monitored by the California Department of Education. This operation is a self supporting program.
